What is flexible stone?
Flexible stone — also called soft stone or MCM (Modified Clay Material) — is an ultra-thin decorative sheet made of about 70% inorganic mineral powders (stone dust, quartz sand, natural minerals) bound with a polymer emulsion. It captures the relief of real stone — travertine, slate, limestone, granite — in a 1:1 replica that looks and feels like the original.

Why it suits homes in Portugal
- No builder required. Finding reliable tradespeople is one of the biggest frustrations for homeowners in Portugal — especially for foreign residents. Flexible stone is a genuine DIY material: cut with a knife, glued with standard flexible tile adhesive over any sound, flat surface. A feature wall takes a weekend.
- Renovation without demolition. It goes directly over existing render — and even over old tiles — so there is no rubble, no dust and no days of disruption.
- Built for the coast. The exterior line is tested for exactly the conditions Algarve and coastal homes face: salt-spray tested (ΔE 0.75), accelerated UV ageing (xenon, ΔE 1.68) with no chalking or flaking, water absorption ~4%, and fire classification A2-s1,d0 — it is a mineral material, not plastic.
- Curves and columns. Because the sheet bends, it wraps around columns, curved walls and corners where rigid stone would need complex piece-by-piece cutting.
Where to use it
Feature walls in living rooms and bedrooms, fireplace surrounds, entrance halls, bathroom walls outside the shower (covering old tiles without removing them), garden walls, columns — and exterior facades using the exterior line. Two honest limits: we don’t recommend it inside the shower by default (it demands strict daily ventilation), nor in kitchens — cooking grease adheres strongly to the mineral surface and is hard to remove. For those areas, talk to us first.

Is flexible stone real stone?
The surface is mineral — about 70% inorganic stone powders — moulded from real stone to a 1:1 texture. It is not printed vinyl or plastic; that is why it carries an A2 fire classification.
Can I install it myself?
Yes. It cuts with a utility knife and is applied with flexible tile adhesive (class C2) and a notched trowel over a sound, clean, flat surface. No specialist trades needed.
Does it survive the Algarve sun and sea air?
The exterior line is tested for UV ageing and salt spray with near-zero colour change, and the colour runs through the sheet rather than sitting on the surface.
Can it go over existing tiles?
Yes — if the tiles are firmly attached and clean, flexible stone can be applied directly over them. No hacking off, no rubble. (Bathrooms: dry zones. Kitchens: we don’t recommend it — grease adheres strongly to the mineral surface.)
